About us
The HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research (EK) is part of the Hungarian Research Network. Its activities include basic and applied research and development in accordance with the provisions of the Hungarian Act on Atomic Energy in the field of renewable energy sources, environmental protection systems, and functional materials. The operation of the Budapest Research Reactor is also among its key activities.
The research profile of the Institute for Energy Security and Environmental Safety (EKBI) has evolved to place greater emphasis on key areas that address current scientific and societal challenges. A major focus lies in the advancement of nuclear analytical and imaging techniques, with applications in both energy and materials science. Significant efforts are directed toward environmental physics studies related to energy production, particularly its implications for public health and environmental safety. The Institute also pursues research on environmentally friendly and cost-effective “green” catalytic and surface processes, as well as energy storage and renewable energy technologies. The main research topics include green energy, optimization of the energy mix, radiation chemistry, radiation safety and security, nuclear reactions and the use of radioisotopes, and the chemistry of surfaces and catalysis.
The mission of Environmental Physics Department (KFL) is to carry out research on the environmental burden originating from different sources and on the human-environment interaction. The evaluation of the environmental impact of fossil, renewable and nuclear energy cycles and the quantification of health effects of environmental pollutants are also in the focus of our research. Our research activity is completed in the frame of national and international scientific projects and co-operations with industrial partners. Our researchers has decade-long experience in transport and deposition of radioactive aerosol in the lungs, in microdosimetry, and in modelling the biological effects of internal emitters.
